A little info on today's video. First the Bascule Bridge over the Saginaw River was built by the American Bridge Co. in 1944 and is a counterweight bridge that is no longer in use but the trains still do use it. The Potter Street Station was built in 1881 and used until 1950. It is 285 feet by 40 feet wide and is two and a half stories. The station started with the Flint and Pere Marquette then merged to form the Pere Marquette Railway in 1900 which then was purchased by the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway. Three years later passenger service was discontinued-I would love to have one of those passenger cars that are sitting on the tracks at the LSRC yard. In 1955 C&O planned to demolish-it was in good condition then and the station was used as a crew base by CSX Transportation till they closed the station for good in 1986. It is currently vacant and owned by a non-profit organization -The Saginaw Depot preservation Corporation (SDPC). There was an arson fire in 1991 and SDPC was able to get a grant from MDOT to repair the roof in 1993. But when you look at the video there are definitely holes and weak spots that need attention immediately. The SDPC is still actively pursuing grants and the station was added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 29, 1996. In 2007 A one million renovation grant was provided by the Department of Housing and Urban Development but the funds were not received as the SDPC did not meet the deadline. I would hate to see this station disappear as so many have. I was lucky to see a post on FB from someone who takes alot of LSRC photos and he saw the train from todays video cross the bridge by Bay City and he-Mike Fogelsinger gave this info-The 311 job is backing across the Saginaw River Bridge in Bay City and it features a SD70, SD50, GP40-3 and an SD40-2 with 82 cars headed for Saginaw where we later saw it. The train had 82 cars and picked up an additional 20 cars in the Lakestate yard from the local 310 job.
