Playing ball control, the Hawkeyes received the opening kickoff and kept the ball for nearly seven minutes. The results was an 84-yard drive and a one-yard touchdown run by Sedrick Shaw. Iowa State answered when Troy Davis ran 63 yards for a touchdown with 20 seconds left in the first quarter. A 26-yard field goal by Jamie Kohl with 7:06 remaining in the half would be the final Cyclone points of the day. When fullback Rodney Filer ran for a one yard touchdown with three minutes left in the first half, Iowa took the lead for good. Touchdown runs of five yards by Tavian Banks and one yard by Matt Sherman were the only touchdowns in the second half. Todd Romano kicked a 31-yard field goal to round out the scoring, On the day, Shaw rushed for a career-high 178 yards on 32 carries. Iowa's kicking game was less than perfect with Brion Hurley missing a 29-yard field goal and a PAT, while Todd Romano missed two PAT's. Linebacker Bobby Diaco led the team wtih 12 tackles while Vernon Rollins had nine. Ed Gibson also had nine tackles and a 67-yard fumble return.
