1. Crystal Growth
This is also the first step for the whole producing process, it is basically the process where we obtain the sapphire ingot, the raw material of our products.

The machine we use for crystal growth is the furnace from GT advanced technology. It consists of three main parts: the chamber on the top, the helium tubes in the middle and around, and the control panel at the bottom.

We start the process by putting a seed, which is a small piece of sapphire ingot at the bottom middle area of a crucible. The crucible will be placed inside the chamber and filled with Aluminum oxide. The chamber will heat up the crucible up to 2030℃, the approximate melting point of Al2O3 and the helium gas goes through the bottom of the chamber to extract the heat.

This will create a critical point with the cool bottom and the melted Al2O3 at the top and the Al2O3 starts to grow with the seed from bottom to top gradually.

The control panel below allows us to do the programming and monitor the whole process.

The whole crystal growing process will take 18 days for each furnace to grow a 100kg piece of the sapphire ingot, 21 days for 140Kg. Averagely one 140kg ingot may produce 850-900 pieces of screen protectors.



2. 2. Rough machining



Step A: Planning

We plan how the ingots should be shaped and sawed here. Comparing to the KY method, the ingots obtained by HEM (Heat Exchange Method) are more regular in shape, fewer bubbles, and impurities which means the utilization of our ingots are much higher. (around 50%).



Step B: Sawing and Grinding

After we finish the crystal growth and obtain the sapphire ingot, the following step is rough machining. We use the sawing machine to shape the ingot into bricks for further machining, and then we use the multi-wire sawing machines to slice the bricks into pieces.



3. Fine Machining



A．double-sided lapping.

-The wafers come from rough machining will be processed by fine machining. Firstly. the wafers will go through double-sided lapping. These double-sided grinding machines are used to achieve a high degree of accuracy in flatness, parallelism and surface finish.

B．Laser-cutting

-Laser-cutting machines are used for shaping or drilling holes on the screen. The laser provides instant high temperature so that the sapphire melt and solidify instantly so that shaping and drilling are complete.

C．Chamfering

-However, the laser-cutting leaves very tiny unnoticeable deckle edges. That may cause unpleasant tactility and enhance the possibility of cracking. That is the reason why chamfering is very essential. The chamfering process is done by the CNC devices and the wafer edges are ground to a smooth state.

D．DMP&CMP

-the wafers are not transparent when they are just cut by the multiple wire machine. The polishing process is needed to increase the transmissivity of the screen. DMP is short for disk mechanical polishing. We put the wafers on the round disk, fix them with wax and then polished them on a large round copper disk. Please be noted that this process can only be done in a single-sided way. CMP is short for chemical mechanical polishing. That is a double-sided polishing process with the help of some chemicalsubstance. The chemical reaction will further increase the flatness and screen finish so that the transmissivity is maximized. The tempered glass needs only 10mins on polishing but sapphire takes 4 hours each on DMP and CMP.

E．Silk coating screen

-Silkscreen coating is the final process before cleaning and shipping out. Silkscreen may add color or extra features to our final products, such as logos, patterns and so on. Screen coating may increase the light transmissivity up to 92%, which makes our sapphire screen products meet almost all the demands for the current consumer electronics. It also extends the lifetime of the screen, makes it looks brand new at all time and it improves the stain resistance capability as well.
