For the first time in almost fifty years, the United Nations are conveying a three-day conference in New York to address the global water crisis and to assess the progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals contained in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Real progress on the water agenda and solutions to the global water crisis are only possible by understanding water as a common good, not a commodity, and by putting people and their human rights at the center of the discussion.

In doing so it is imperative to listen and to include the visions and knowledge of all rights holders – among others water defenders, Indigenous Peoples, local communities -. They are deeply aware of the negative impacts of putting other interests before people and the environment and are actively involved in proposing inclusive and sustainable solutions that leave no one behind.

In this context, this gallery of testimonies of water defenders aims to bring the voices, knowledge and demands of water defenders and rights holders across the globe to the #UNWaterConference2023.
