The UK beverage scene of the late 1980s and early 1990s was forever marked by the audacious marketing of Red Rock Cider. Produced by the Taunton Cider Company, based in cider-rich Somerset, this drink was perhaps more famous for what it wasn't than what it was. The company was founded on the region's deep history of cider production, recalling a time when farmers were even paid their wages in the beverage. Yet, Red Rock chose to forge a completely new, irreverent identity.
Taunton Cider Company invested a sizeable budget in a daring TV campaign. The strapline became a legendary piece of advertising copy: "It's not red, and there's no rocks in it." The initial, bolder ending—"...and it doesn't taste like cider"—was wisely dropped, but the message was clear: this was cider redefined.

In 1990, the campaign reached its peak. Directed by John Lloyd, a series of spoof detective adverts titled Fraud Squad! aired, starring comedy icon Leslie Nielsen, fresh off his Police Squad! and Naked Gun success. Nielsen perfectly delivered the deadpan comedy, with Hank Marvin even making a notable cameo.

While the campaign was a roaring commercial success, the original Red Rock Cider saw its short life end in the mid-1990s, shortly after large breweries faced regulatory break-ups. However, its legacy endured, and cider enthusiasts re-registered the name, bringing production back to Somerset in 2016. The original ads, however, remain a textbook example of advertising brilliance that defied convention.
