What is Survival Horror? – The Genre's History and Defining Characteristics

The discussion of survival horror vs. action horror has been a fairly heated topic since probably the launch of Resident Evil 4, whose undeniable success caused a major shift for the subgenre and made other franchises desperate for the same acclaim – Silent Hill, Alone in the Dark, and more. But what exactly is "survival horror?" How did it appear? And what are its most important elements? In this video, I seek to answer those questions and give my own views on what makes a game "true" survival horror.
