Understanding Free Flap Breast Reconstruction

Drs. Ergun Kocak and Pankaj Tiwari of Midwest Breast and Aesthetic Surgery in Columbus, Ohio, help us understand the differences in abdominal based breast reconstruction.

Dr. Tiwari says patients don't often understand the differences between pedicle tram, free tram, or DIEP flap.

Dr. Kocak points out the scars on the outside of these procedures look the same. It's what happens on the inside, during surgery, that makes these procedures very different. It involves either using the six-pack muscle or sparing that muscle which becomes very important to patient recovery after surgery.
