Is Medicare Killing Independent Physician Practices?

Dr. Lisa Egbert is an Ob/Gyn in Dayton, OH who had to shut down her independent practice after 27 years because of declining Medicare and Commercial Insurance Payments to Doctors.

Over the last 5 years, Medicare reimbursement has DECLINED 33% for physicians adjusted for inflation.

This trend of diminishing physician reimbursement dates back even longer.

From 2001 to 2022, physician payment by Medicare increased 10% while overall inflation increased 70%.

Interestingly, hospital reimbursement kept pace with inflation... also increasing 70%. So doctors were left in the dust compared to hospitals by Medicare.

Lower physician reimbursement is similar from commercial insurance as well. Physicians are paid approximately 139% of Medicare rates by commercial insurance.

Conversely, hospital services are reimbursed MUCH HIGHER. Commercial insurance pays hospitals 263% of Medicare for outpatient services and 205% of Medicare for inpatient services.

As a result of these lower physician reimbursements, many independent physician practices have been forced to shut down or sell themselves to the local hospital system.
