By request, a demo of my Schaefer 16" carved archtop, made in 1993 by Ed Schaefer of Austin, Texas.
I just wanted to show off my favorite guitar that I've ever played. I still can't believe I'm lucky enough to own it myself.
This is a 1993 Ed Schaefer carved 16". It is the first 16" that Ed ever made, serial number 16-00. It features a floating handmade pickup, single volume knob, Grover tuners with Art Deco stairstep buttons, no inlays, binding on the body/neck/pickguard/tailpiece/headstock/truss rod cover, and I use 13-56 La Bella flats.
It has a carbon fiber reinforced 5-piece neck with a thin/flat profile, like a classical guitar (Ed studied classical guitar before he started building archtops). I, too, started on classical guitar before switching to jazz, and I love the neck profile, no inlays, and simple electronics.
I'm absolutely in love with it and I have played it for hours every day, for a decade now. I got it from Guitars 'n Jazz in Summit, New Jersey in 2013. The INSTANT I held it, I knew I was taking it home, even though it was double my budget. I just knew I wouldn't forgive myself if I didn't get it. It's been my #1 ever since. I have to pinch myself every time I pick it up. It just makes me smile ear-to-ear every time, it sounds so good!
Follow-up post:
Hey y'all! My previous post about my 1993 Schaefer 16" carved archtop got a lot of attention, and I had a few requests for a video so you can hear what it sounds like. So, I thought I'd record something for you.
This is not quite my usual tone for recording and performing - I usually play through a DV Mark Little Jazz 45-watt class D solid state amp, with an 8" neo speaker. When I perform, I also use a vocal mic for talking & singing. I position the mic such that it picks up a bit of the acoustic sound of the guitar, as well. Then I mix the two together.
For this video, though, I mic'ed the guitar up with two different mics, and then just literally plugged the pickup straight into the interface, so you can hear the guitar by itself, without anything else in the signal chain. No amp, no reverb, no compression, no EQ, just the pure sound of the floating pickup, + the two mics. I talk more about my setup in the video.
I've had this guitar for 10 years, and I estimate I've put at least 5,000 hours on it, probably more. It's 31 years old and was made by Ed Schaefer of Schaefer Guitars http://www.schaeferguitars.com/
I'm so in love with this thing. From the instant I first held it, I knew it was "the one." Thanks for reading!
