Beijing - 2 December 2025

3. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Lin Jian, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson:
“The current situation in China-Japan relations is entirely caused by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s erroneous remarks over Taiwan. Japan should abide by its political commitments to China, retract its erroneous remarks, and reflect and correct with concrete actions. Any external force that dares to interfere in Taiwan-related matters will be met with resolute countermeasures. The DPP (Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party) authorities harbor malicious intentions, which are contemptible. Their attempts to seek independence by relying on foreign forces are doomed to fail.”

5. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Lin Jian, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson:
“The election is an internal affair of Honduras. China has always adhered to the principle of non-interference in internal affairs. I would like to point out that since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Honduras in March 2023, bilateral relations have developed rapidly, cooperation in various fields has yielded fruitful results and has brought tangible benefits to the two peoples. China stands ready to work with Honduras, on the basis of the one-China principle, to continue advancing China-Honduras relations and better benefit the two peoples.”

STORYLINE:
China on Tuesday reiterated it would react to all external interference in Taiwan affairs with “resolute countermeasures,” as tensions with Japan continue to simmer over Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s recent remarks about Japan’s potential involvement in a Taiwan contingency.

Taiwanese Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung said in an interview earlier in the day the dispute between Beijing and Tokyo might drag on for a year, warning that an escalation would benefit no party.

Asked about Lin's comments, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian blamed Takaichi for the strained ties and again urged Japan to “retract its erroneous remarks".

Lin continued that Taiwan's ruling Democratic Progressive Party harbored "malicious intentions".

China was angered by Takaichi’s statement last month that its military could get involved if China were to take action against Taiwan, the self-governing island that Beijing says must come under its rule.

Since then, Beijing has taken a series of retaliatory measures, including banning Japanese aquatic imports, halting approvals of Japanese movies to be screened in China, and issuing an advisory against traveling to Japan.

Separately, Lin said China was ready to “continue advancing China-Honduras relations” based on the "one-China principle” after two leading candidates in Honduras’ presidential race pledged to switch diplomatic ties from Beijing back to Taipei.

Honduras established ties with China in 2023 after breaking off relations with Taiwan, a move widely seen as another diplomatic victory for Beijing as it steps up efforts to isolate Taiwan.
