Paranoid is the title track from Black Sabbath’s second studio album which also included, Iron Man and War Pigs. This record solidified Black Sabbath as pioneers in heavy metal music back in 1970. It’s no surprise that Megadeth was one of many bands involved in tribute records to Sabbath and Ozzy which is where this version of, Paranoid came from. This version is on the, Nativity in Black album and Megadeth actually received a Grammy nomination from the performance. I like the fact that the drummer, Nick Menza had a studio take where he kept playing after the end and it’s what made the final version along with Dave Mustaine yelling at him :)
I’ve been lucky enough to be invited to play in several shows in Nashville that are organized by two different groups but contain many of the same session and touring musicians. Tyson Leslie organizes one of them called Rare Hare and it’s usually a night of deep-cut metal and thrash covers. On this night, Tyson got a call from Megadeth's bass player, David Ellefson and the evening turned into a bass extravaganza where Dave played on all the songs and the music all tied in with Dave and his long and successful career. BTW, he’s a super cool guy, an absolutely rock-solid bass player, and has done more than most to promote women in rock music.
These jam sessions are always filled with killer musicians that work in mostly country music. These guys have played on literally thousands of records and tour with some of the biggest names but they can’t resist learning some technical songs from their youth, turning up all the amps way too loud and meeting up with each other every 6 weeks or so for a musical version of fight club. The pictures you see in the video were some photos that I edited myself into for an IG post right before the show to entertain the guys that let me hang around and play.
I’m 15 years old and I want to be a professional musician when I grow up. I try to play lots of instruments but the one that I feel most at home on is a drum set. I would say the only thing that impresses me more than a great musician is a great songwriter so I also spend some of my time trying to learn the magic of songwriting. I thought it would help me keep focused on music if I started a drum series where I learned a new song every couple of weeks. After 5 years, it’s now turned into a larger musical search but my goal hasn’t changed. Hopefully, I will keep doing it, keep loving music and keep getting better.
