Augsburg is a city in Swabia, Bavaria (Schwaben, Bayern) in Germany (Deutschland). Augsburg was founded by the Romans in 15 BC and is one of the oldest cities of Germany. Augsburg has a medieval city centre (Altstadt) and has many urban districts around it. Between 1530 and 155 Augsburg played a crucial role in the reformation. Furthermore, the oldest social housing project was started here in 1530 (the Fuggerei) by Jakob Fugger. It is the third largest city of Bavaria after Munich and Nuremberg. The city of Augsburg has a population of 300,000 and 885,000 in its metropolitan area. Interesting sites to visit are the Town Hall, the Perlachturm and the market, the Fuggerei, the Fugger's City Palace, Fünfgratturm tower, Cathedral of St. Maria, Augsburg Synagogue and the St. Ulrich and St. Afra Cathedral.
