1965 witnessed the great massacre of British railway lines following upon the Beeching report. Many of the victims were much loved and deeply regretted, none more so than the Port Road, the line from Dumfries across Galloway to the ferry port of Stranraer.

This was the route of the "Paddy" - the Northern Ireland mail train from London - and the setting for John Buchan's "The Thirty-Nine Steps" - made into films in 1935, 1959, 1978 and 2008.
