One of the most common questions we get here physical therapy application coach is how many observation hours do I need to get accepted into PT school?

This is a great question as obtaining observation hours can be time consuming and challenging, but is such a great activity to help you learn about the profession, increase your professional network, and obtain strong letters of recommendation.

Over the last decade of coaching pre pts here at physical therapy application coach we have found what works and doesn't work regarding observation hours, and have created the 3-5, 4-6 rule of thumb. But before I dive into more detail, remember as always, you need to do your research and determine what the individual requirements are for each of the DPT programs you hope to apply to.

The 3-5, 4-6 rule is as follows: 300 - 500 observation hours obtained in 4-6 different settings. This includes obtaining observation hours in both inpatient and outpatient settings. you should also strive to observe a variety of demographics and patient diagnoses. In our experience we have found that quality and diversity of hours is more important than the quantity.

There also comes a point when obtaining additional observation hours comes with diminishing returns. Obtaining additional hours generally is a great activity, but there may be other activities that you could spend time on that will add greater value to your application.

In summary, shoot for 300 to 500 hours spread across four to six different settings in both inpatient and outpatient locations observing a wide variety of diagnoses and demographics. Quality and diversity is more important than quantity.
