Before Ouch, Now All Done! | BilliSpeaks

Billi is an older lady with a few chronic conditions we manage. She’s overall doing really well, but we get occasional bouts of an upset tummy.

She has IBD, chronic kidney disease due to a congenital issue, and last year had to have a SUB (subcutaneous urethral bypass) put in place due to a ureter stone that obstructed her urine outflow.

She’s on a very specific diet to manage these conditions, there aren’t a ton of options for all combined! In kidney disease one of the most important diet changes you can make is lowering the phosphorus content in the diet. Increased moisture intake is important too, but this can come from either moistening the dry food or increasing access to water. In Billi’s case, she’s a great drinker and has never had issues consuming enough water. Feline nutrition is never as simple as wet = good, dry = bad.

In IBD the type of protein is frequently the cause of the inflammation (NOT GRAIN - this is a human marketing maneuver to make you think the “grain-free” diets are healthier), and chicken based diets are one of the most common culprits. Strict feeding of either hydrolyzed protein or novel protein diets can be helpful in IBD management.

We’re sampling some new IBD friendly wet food options as a treat, due to the phosphorus content they can’t be her sole diet, but a small bit to help with medicating and to change things up for her has minimal impact. She had a reaction to this one, so we won’t continue to offer it!
