‘Holding On’

tw : discussion of suicidality.

As we approach the close of Suicide Awareness Month and approach World Mental Health Day, I wanted to share a piece I choreographed this year. I created this in response to the current suicide epidemic in an effort to illustrate the impact that emotional suppression, in combination with a lack of resources, can have on our wellbeing and the world around us. My hope is that this piece can create conversation and understanding, and can act as a reminder that we are never alone.

All parts of us are meant to see the light, even what we hide in the darkness. Our shadows are important — they are the parts of us that are calling out to be acknowledged and held.

I encourage you to talk to your loved ones, your children, your community, the people and world around you. If you’re not sure how to have the conversations ask for support, ask for guidance. Our courage within the discomfort is where the change truly begins and where our collective healing starts.

Our emotional health is important.
Our mental health is important.
Our wellbeing is important.
What we feel is never too much.

I would also like to deeply acknowledge the dancers, as they were instrumental in bringing this piece to life. Their ability to show up so openly and vulnerably was truly remarkable. I feel an immense amount of gratitude for each of them and feel proud of how they so beautifully and honestly contributed to this work. Having an opportunity to set this piece with them was truly a gift — one that allowed me to grow greatly within my artistic voice and being.

I also want to acknowledge our cinematographer, Dan Brink, for contributing so wholeheartedly to this project. His passion for this work and its message made all the difference.

I feel incredibly proud of this piece and of everyone who was a part of it. If ‘Holding On’ is something that resonates with you or would resonate with a community that you love please feel free to share, and please feel free to connect on what it brings up for you.

Thank you for watching, thank you for reading, and thank you for showing up for yourself in the best way you know how in this moment.
