passacaglia is a slow-beat dance that originated in Spain at the end of the 16th century and gradually developed into segmented variations on the oval-bass melody, reaching a high level in the middle and late Baroque.
This piece is adapted from the last dance of Handel's Suite No. 7 in g minor, Part 6.
The Norwegian post-Grieg composer and violinist Johan Halvorsen (1864-1935) arranged it in 1887 as a duo for violin and viola.
