Graphic novels have never been part of mainstream literature, but attitudes are changing. Author and playwright Denise Mina - who is best known for her crime novels, but has written for the Hellblazer series - explores how the comic book is finally being taken seriously by established prose authors.

She chats with fellow Scottish crime writer Ian Rankin - who has just penned his first graphic novel, Dark Entries - and the "Godfather of graphic novels", Neil Gaiman - writer of The Sandman - about the strengths of the medium.
