4. Osteoarthritis of the hip joint
Hip Osteoarthritis (OA) can be primary or secondary.
Secondary Causes include congenital hip dysplasia, posttraumatic fractures, rheumatoid diseases (RA, SLE), purulent arthritis, and aseptic osteonecrosis of the femoral head.
Clinical Findings include:
• Pain: Motion and load-related, progressing to night pain in Grade III-IV stages.
• Limited Range of Motion: Especially rotations, often accompanied by flexion and external rotation contractures.
• Gait Issues: Claudication and Trendelenburg’s sign.
• Deformity: Limb shortening.
X-ray Findings typically show joint space narrowing, subchondral sclerosis, osteophytes, and bone cysts.
Treatment involves conservative measures or surgical options such as valgus intertrochanteric osteotomy or Total Hip Arthroplasty (THA).
