Madeleine McCann's parents have lost a court case against a former detective investigating their daughter's case.

Goncalo Amaral had implicated Gerry and Kate McCann in Madeleine's disappearance in 2007 his best-selling book.

The European Court of Human Rights ruled their right to a private life had not been violated and any damage to their reputation would have arisen from the fact that they had been suspects in the case, not from Mr Amaral's book.
