Maelifell is a green mountain standing up tall in the middle of a vast black sand desert in the highlands of Iceland. It is not easy to reach, as you must have the proper vehicle, and it is necessary to drive on unpaved roads and even cross rivers. Once we arrived at the mountain, I was awestruck by how such a large mountain could jut up out of the the black sand desert all by itself. Viewing Maelifell from the sky with a drone really gives you an amazing perspective of the landscape in Iceland. In the background of this beautiful mountain is the Mýrdalsjökull glacier. This glacier is the third largest in Iceland, and it once covered Maelifell. That gives you an idea of how large it once was.
