I don't think they are using an open source solution out of the goodness of their hearts.

If an app is made in HTML5, it will run on a PC, on a smart phone or on a smart TV.

Or like the Tizen based TV Samsung wants to put out in 2015.

Yes, the shift would make it a nearly universal solution. The HTML apps would also work any other version of the Tizen operating system they put out.

Since HTML5 is open source, apps developed for that will work with any version of the Linux kernel. This means that Tizen apps will run on Linux PCs and the Tizen phone.

Talking about security holes, ssing HTML5 for apps is a major step away from the Android operating system, as well as all the security concerns that an OS managed by Google brings.

True. The NSA revelations that Google essentially gives all its data to the NSA certainly hurt American tech companies.

Moving to HTML5 and away from Android also improves Tizen's reputation with Chinese, Indian and African consumers who are buying up smart phones in the hundreds of millions.

Tizen is being pushed by Samsung, a Korean company. But the ability to say their hardware, OS and apps are independent of anything American is a major selling point for customers who don't want the USA spying on them.

That's only one selling point. The lower development costs and interoperability are probably bigger concerns.

Not having to worry about "Do No Evil" Google deciding that your apps are too politically incorrect is another selling point, too.

Simply getting rid of Adobe Flash and Microsoft Silverlight for media streaming is reason enough.
