GOODNESS: Kindness in Action!

Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness…
 
Last week we learned that Kindness, maybe translated gentleness in your Bible – brings the idea of forbearance – it is the grace which pervades the whole nature, mellowing all which would have been harsh & austere. So, you don’t say a person has kindness, you say that person is kind! Kindness pervades the whole nature. It is a spiritual state of being kind.
 
Today, we receive the fruit of Goodness as a more active form of kindness – kindness in action, but not necessarily requiring a kindly delivery - we might say. Some commentators associate the concept of Goodness with generosity that springs from kindness. So, kindness and goodness are very much linked, as we have seen throughout our study of the other fruit of the Spirit. As kindness pervades your nature, you will put that fruit into action by goodness!
 
1. God is Good – Exodus 33:19
a. full of Goodness – In His very nature
b. Remember Jesus’ encounter with the Rich Young Ruler in Mark 10:17-18
i. God is Good and..
c. desires our Good – Romans 12:2; Psalm 23:6; 27:13; 31:19; Romans 8:28…
 
2. His Spirit empowers our Goodness
a. 2 Thessalonians 1:11 – fulfill every resolve for good – the full effects of goodness as a blessing to others
b. The purpose of goodness – remember it as active kindness – is the blessing of others.
c. Our goodness targets others, it’s not for us:
 
3. Goodness is active kindness.
a. Perhaps God uses the Fruit of Goodness to motivate your generosity
i. 2 Corinthians 9:6-8
ii. Giving bountifully, cheerfully, by the Grace abundantly supplied by God – for every good work. 
c. Romans 15:13-14
i. May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope. I myself am satisfied about you, my brothers, that you yourselves are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge and able to instruct one another. 
ii. It sounds to me, like the Apostle Paul has been hanging out here at Midway! Let me agree with him and say, about you - I myself am satisfied about you, my brothers, that you yourselves are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge and able to instruct one another. 
iii. The world needs to see our goodness – the active display of His kindness in us.
iv. Let’s keep it up! 1 Corinthians 15:58
