What is a FAST lens?

In this video we talk about the how the maximum aperture of a lens affects its speed and size.

When photographers talk about to the “speed” of a lens, they are referring to the largest aperture (most amount of light) that the lens can let through it. The faster the lens, the more light can pass through the aperture blades and expose the sensor.

This larger aperture helps you in two distinct ways.

First, letting more light through the lens allows a photographer to use a faster shutter speed and/or lower ISO to get a properly exposed image.

Second, a larger aperture gives you a shallower depth of field which allows you to blur more in front of, and behind your focus point.

To summarize, while faster lenses may be larger and more expensive than their slower counterparts, the benefits outweigh the downsides for many types of photographers.
