Yuán (缘) is an untranslatable Chinese term roughly meaning an affinity between people or a destined coincidence. The Chinese title Dí Yuán (笛缘) means a yuán of flutes. Composed by Wang Chenwei in 2016 as a commission by Tan Qinglun, who premiered Dí Yuán with his teacher Prof Zhan Yongming, the piece celebrated the yuán between student and teacher. Yuán can be manifested in many ways – the two soloists of this concert, Lim Daoteng and Sebastian Ang, were both also students of Prof Zhan. They first crossed paths in the NUS Chinese Orchestra, bonding over their shared learning experiences and passion for the Dizi.

The piece begins slowly, representing a chance encounter that gradually blossoms into friendship. The increasing tempo leads into a fugue in Chinese style – an intellectual discourse among the instruments. After the fugue’s stretto, the two flutes play interlocking semiquaver patterns while the orchestra takes over the main melody, leading to a whirlwind-like cadenza. The slow section is recapitulated, like a reminiscence of the past. Finally, the two flutes play in unison and fade out together, a testament to everlasting yuán.

This piece received the Top Local Classical Music Award from COMPASS in 2022.

《笛缘》是王辰威 2016 年之作，由陈庆伦委约并与詹永明教授首演，表达了师生缘。本次音乐会的独奏者林道腾与洪澄晖是师兄弟，也师从詹永明教授。两位在新加坡国立大学华乐团相识，其共同的学习历程与对笛子的热忱使得他们成为莫逆之交。

乐曲缓缓地开始，仿佛一次偶然的相遇慢慢发展成友谊。音乐的节奏逐渐加快，进入一段具中华风的赋格；双笛与乐队进行智力性的交流。赋格以密接合应技巧结尾，双笛吹奏旋风般的华彩。慢板再现，犹如对过去的怀念。最后的齐奏共同淡出，表达了永恒的缘。

《笛缘》获 2022 年新加坡词曲版权协会“年度本地古典音乐奖”。
