Principle: Droplets of water tend to condense along the path of motion of particles formed from ion pairs when they pass through supersaturated water vapour. (Or). When water vapour-saturated air is suddenly allowed to expand, the vapours condensate on particles in the form of fine liquid droplets, which can be photographed against a dark background.

Construction: It is consist of a vessel, fitted with a piston. The Piston contains dust-free, water-vapour-saturated air. One camera is placed at the appropriate distance to photograph a series of droplets with strong lighting and a dark background.

Working: Ionising radiations are allowed to enter the chamber through a window, while the air in the chamber is rapidly cooled due to adiabatic expansion. The ions produced by the radiations act as condensation nuclei, resulting in the formation of fine droplets of water. Cameras placed in strategic locations photograph a series of droplets with strong illumination and a dark background. Cloud tracks are the paths of ionising particles photographed in this manner. We can use the Wilson Cloud Chamber to determine the path that the ions will take when the Bex radiations are passed through the gas.
