The actor's drug experimentation progressed, resulting in many legal difficulties. Downey was arrested for the first time in 1996 when he was pulled over for speeding, and officials discovered heroin, cocaine, and a handgun in his vehicle. Later that year, he was arrested again. His continuous substance misuse and arrests eventually led to his incarceration. From 1999 to 2000, Downey spent nearly a year in a California substance abuse treatment facility and state jail in Corcoran, California. His stay in prison was interspersed with periods of self-reflection, which he later characterized as a watershed moment in his life.
