Commissioned by industrialist and philanthropist J. Irwin Miller and his wife Xenia Simons Miller in 1953, the Miller House and Garden in Columbus, Indiana, is one of America’s most highly regarded examples of mid-century Modernism. Considered the most refined, fully-realized work of domestic architecture, landscape and interiors, Miller House and Garden is an icon of Modern design. The home was designed by Eero Saarinen (1910–1961), with interiors by Alexander Girard (1907–1993), and landscape design by Daniel Urban Kiley (1912–2004).

The property was donated to the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields in 2009, and is open for public and private tours March – December. Visit https://discovernewfields.org/do-and-... for more information.

This virtual tour focuses specifically on Alexander Girard’s use of color in the home, with audio commentary by Shelley Selim, Curator of Design and Decorative Arts at the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields. It is an adaptation of a virtual reality tour of the home, which is available to view in the IMA Design Gallery.

Miller House and Garden is owned and cared for by the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields. Tours at Miller House and Garden are made possible through the Columbus Area Visitors Center.
