In this video, I review LK Chen's Magnificent Chu Jian and Soaring Sky Jian as well as explore the Chinese bronze age and the history of the 8 sided jian. Bamianjian first emerged early in China's bronze age and saw continued use through the transition from bronze to iron. The iron age in China stands out as unique among many other contemporary societies due to the timeline that it occurred in. Some bronze weapons may have remained in use into the Qin and Han dynasties due to the way that iron was produced in the region as well as some unique properties of bronze weapons in the Warring States period. The 8 sided jian stands out as an ideal model to gain insight into the process of this change.
