Rail tank car transloading operators work in extremely challenging environments, and are typically dealing with hazardous and toxic materials. As part of their transloading process, they need to establish how much residual product, or “heel”, has been left inside the tank car. The most common way to do this is to open the manway hatch and to “dip” the car.
This is time-consuming: to vent and depressurize the car; to remove the bolts; and to replace them with the correct torque. And it is expensive to check, and often replace, gaskets each time the manway is opened.
This is the most common cause of Non-accidental Releases. Further, being exposed to toxic fumes is unsafe for operators. As a result, they can require additional personal protective equipment, which is cumbersome and takes time to put on. The best solution is to use radar technology, and connect digitally to a control system to create visibility inside the tank car, without opening the car. Creating an automated closed loop system saves time, saves money, and saves people.
