One question we get asked a lot, is how does it all work together?

Say you have a house with a few televisions, some speakers, under-floor heating, a gate to your driveway and some CCTV cameras that you want to control or monitor.

What you need is central control, a brain in the middle of it all.

That's where control systems come in... also known as home automation or building management systems.

A central control system allows you, the end user, to use a remote or user interface, for example an app on your mobile device to control end devices, like TVs, amps, doors and many others.

All that's really needed for the backbone to link everything together is a network.

Networks provide the possibility of control via internet protocol.

IP Control requires just a single cable type, and in some cases just a single cable, full stop, and that cable is ethernet.

If IP control is not supported by a device, it can likely be controlled via a serial connection, contact closure, relays, infrared or CEC.

CEC stands for consumer electronics control, but we tend not to use this as it negates control commands from central control systems.

With an ethernet connection we can control a device, connect it to the internet, and even send video to a TV.

But, what's needed to do this? What is the brain of the operations?
