The Supreme Court's verdict on the Maharashtra political crisis was delivered on Thursday, stating that the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government cannot be restored as Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray had voluntarily resigned before facing a floor test. However, the court acknowledged that the governor had made an error in concluding that Uddhav had lost the majority, deeming the floor test order incorrect. The court has also referred the 2016 Nabam Rebia verdict on the power of the speaker regarding the disqualification of MLAs to a larger bench.

The judgment was seen as a victory for Uddhav Thackeray and the Shiv Sena party. Anil Parab, from Shiv Sena's United Bahujan Team (UBT), stated that the violation of the whip by the MLAs of the Shinde faction would lead to their disqualification.

The court emphasized that the Speaker must make timely decisions on the disqualification petitions and should proceed with disqualifying the MLAs. This, according to the court, would ensure justice is served.

The key points of the Supreme Court's decision include the inability to reinstate the MVA government due to Uddhav's voluntary resignation, acknowledgment of the governor's erroneous floor test order, recognition of the political party's power to appoint a whip, and the referral of the Nabam Rebia verdict to a larger bench. Furthermore, the court highlighted that a floor test should not be employed to resolve internal party disputes.

The ruling brings clarity to the political landscape in Maharashtra, but its ramifications and future developments are yet to unfold as the disqualification process and potential political consequences take shape.
