A song of being cooped up on a boat. The Grey Funnel Line is a nickname of the British Navy.

For years, we believed this was a traditional song. But it was written by Cyril Tawney less than 100 years ago.

Sailors, for generations, bid their families farewell and took to sea, to live in extreme confinement and discomfort. Many were even press-ganged into it.

So our coming weeks of lost freedom, though we all wish them past, we might bear as our ancestors would have done. Let’s keep our eyes firmly on the promise of a return to freedom, when we can dance down that walker shore, together again.

See you on the other side.

Keep singing!

(Sung by Ed, Will and Ginger).
