A rear brake on the handlebar.
A thumb brake.
A finger brake.

But why move the rear brake — traditionally a right-foot pedal — to the left hand?

Because at 300 km/h, the old technique simply isn’t enough anymore.

The hand-operated rear brake gives riders:

Insane micro-control the foot can’t match

Stability under heavy braking

Smoother weight transfer into the corner

A way to control the bike at full lean when the right foot can’t reach the pedal

A form of “manual traction control” mid-corner

Earlier throttle exit = free lap time


Just 1 mm of thumb movement can settle the rear, calm the chassis, and keep the bike glued to the line.
Try doing that with a boot at 60 degrees of lean angle.

What fans often don’t know is that the thumb brake was born from injury.
Mick Doohan couldn’t use his right foot after his accident, so Brembo engineered a hand brake for him.
It worked so well that riders all over the world adopted it — not out of necessity, but because it made them faster.

Today, some riders use both systems.
Others rely almost entirely on the thumb brake for razor-sharp control.
