Saiga Antelope
The saiga is a small species of antelope, about the size of a goat (63-80cm shoulder height and 23-40kg in weight), which has a stooping body, a large head, a distinctive pendulant proboscid nose, and an unusual 'up and down' style of running.
About the size of a goat, measuring about 70 cm, saigas feed on grasses, herbs, and shrubs.
Its predators are wolves, foxes, and eagles. In addition to them, sagas are usually attacked by calves.
The legs of the sagas are surprisingly fast and their best defense. They can run up to 80 km/h.
Their large noses filter out dust and warm the frigid air before it reaches the lungs in winters.
Waves of disease in 2003 meant that only 6% of saiga antelopes survived in Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Russia and Uzbekistan.
In 2015, more than half of the world's saiga antelope population was lost due to a mysterious blood disease.
Saiga males can have a harem of up to 30 females.
All of the states of saiga distribution have been part of the Soviet Union or China for most of the last century.
The Saiga Conservation Alliance, a network of researchers and conservationists that emerged in 2006, has provided funding for rangers working in the grasslands where saigas live so that they can act in the protection of the animals.
In China, on the other hand, the saiga antelope species became extinct in the 1960s.
