Chippenham Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Описание к видео Chippenham Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the county of Wiltshire, and around 90 miles west of London, is the town of Chippenham.

In 878 AD Chippenham was occupied by Vikings. Later that year the Saxons, under Alfred the Great, defeated the Danes at the nearby village of Edington. In the aftermath the Danelaw was established whereby the Danes were given territory to the north and to the east of England.

Chippenham became a prominent manufacturer of wool in the 16th century, aided by its location on the River Avon connecting it to Bath and Bristol. In 1798 the Wiltshire and Berkshire Canal was built, opening up more trade routes. In 1841 Chippenham was connected to the Great Western Railway, linking it to London to the East and Bristol to the west.

In 1812 Sir Robert Peel became the Member of Parliament for Chippenham at the age of just 24. In his career he would go on to establish the Metropolitan Police Force in London in 1829. Thus the term 'bobby', referring to an old school policeman, derives from Robert Peel.
