The Maldives has made history by becoming the first country in the world to enforce a generational smoking ban — preventing anyone born on or after January 1, 2007, from ever buying or using tobacco products.
Signed into law by President Mohamed Muizzu, this amendment to the Tobacco Control Act bans all forms of tobacco, including cigarettes, cigars, and chewing tobacco. The move aims to create a tobacco-free generation and set a new benchmark in global public health policy.
While nations like New Zealand and the United Kingdom discussed similar bans, the Maldives is the first to implement it.
In contrast, India continues to struggle with high tobacco use — as per NFHS-5 (2019–21), 38% of men and 8.9% of women above 15 years use tobacco.
This landmark step by the Maldives could inspire other nations to rethink their tobacco control strategies and move toward a smoke-free future.
