Eagles, Cowboys Renew Rivalry as NFL Season Kicks Off in Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA – The 106th season of NFL play opens with fireworks Thursday night as the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles host the Dallas Cowboys at Lincoln Financial Field in an NFC East showdown (NBC, 8:20 p.m. ET).

The Eagles begin their title defense with history in sight. Philadelphia can become just the 10th team ever to win back-to-back Super Bowls, and they’ll lean on a roster stacked with stars on both sides of the ball.

Quarterback Jalen Hurts, the reigning Super Bowl LIX MVP, continues to rewrite the record books. Already ranking third all-time among QBs with 55 career rushing touchdowns, Hurts could become the first quarterback in league history with 10+ rushing TDs in five different seasons. He accounted for 10 total TDs in last year’s postseason and has nine TDs in four career Thursday starts. Against Dallas at home, Hurts boasts a 116.8 passer rating with five TDs and zero INTs.

Running back Saquon Barkley enters his first full season in Philadelphia coming off a historic 2024, when he led the NFL with 2,283 scrimmage yards and 2,005 rushing yards. Barkley has averaged 137 scrimmage yards per game on Thursdays, and racked up 169 against Dallas last season.

The dynamic receiving duo of A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith gives Hurts elite options. Brown has topped 1,000 yards and 7 TDs in five of his first six seasons, while Smith has scored four TDs in his last three home games vs. Dallas, including a 120-yard, 2-TD performance last year.

Defensively, Jalen Carter, Zack Baun, Nolan Smith, and newcomers Jihaad Campbell and Cooper DeJean headline a young but explosive group, while safety Reed Blankenship comes off a four-interception season.

For Dallas, Dak Prescott enters hot in the rivalry, with 16 TDs and just one interception in his last five games vs. Philadelphia. CeeDee Lamb remains the centerpiece of the offense after three straight 100-catch seasons, and new weapons George Pickens and Javonte Williams debut in the star. Defensively, Trevon Diggs and DaRon Bland continue to form one of the NFL’s most dangerous secondaries.

Kickoff is set for 8:20 p.m. ET Thursday on NBC.
