In this video I make ferrocene using FeCl2*4H2O, cyclopentadiene, KOH, DMSO, and THF. I first start by cracking dicyclopentadiene into the monomer cyclopentadiene. The ferrocene synthesis is then carried out with the reaction between small amounts of KCp generated insitu from the KOH and cyclopentadiene with the FeCl2 DMSO solution.
The most common solvent used in this preparation is DME, however this can be substituted with more common solvents such as THF and diethyl ether.
