Noise pollution is one of the top quality of life issues for city dwellers. Studies have shown that repeated noise exposure can have major impacts on health. How can science help to solve this?

Evolution has programmed humans to be aware of sounds as possible sources of danger.
Noise, or unwanted sound, is a pollutant whose effects on health have been largely neglected. Sleep disruption, hearing loss, hypertension, heart disease, and cognitive impairment in children have all been observed impacts from noise pollution.

In cities like New York, noise from traffic and construction can cause average street level readings of 73 dB. This is well above the EPA's health warning figure of 55 dB. Some solutions that could help reduce noise in cities in the longer term would include: Rubber tires on subway cars, Laws requiring EPA approved exhaust systems on all motorcycles, and directional sirens to shield people who are not in the path of an emergency vehicle.

For a more immediate approach, a team of scientists from NYU, along with collaborators at Ohio State University have created a comprehensive research initiative to understand and address noise pollution in NYC and beyond.

The project is called Sounds of New York City (SONYC).

The researchers started by capturing anonymized sound clips around the city using specialized sensors. Each sensor contains a microphone attached to a small aluminum box along with a Raspberry Pi mini-computer. This has yielded a huge amount and variety of audio data with a full range of city sounds.

Using this data and with the help of citizen scientists to listen to and identify sounds in small snippets of audio they are training machine learning networks to understand and identify specific sounds. This machine listening technology will then recognize individual sound sources and produce statistical reports on sound levels and types.

In addition, some citizens have been given apps to notify the team of noise they hear. All of this data will be compared with 311 noise complaint calls to map and create a larger "acoustic model" of the city. Combining this data with predictive models, the project plans to work with City enforcement officials to more strategically identify and mitigate noise.
