Baking in security from the start to make a system or software more secure opposed to adding security measures later. Anything added after the fact changes the system in ways that is difficult to predict, no matter how careful.

A simple analogy for this is, “Why do Formula 1 race cars have brakes?”
On one hand you might think it is to stop, similar to how our cars work. However, Formula 1 race cars have very sophisticated braking systems that allow them to go faster. NASCAR vehicles have a higher top speed than Formula 1 cars, appropriate for oval NASCAR race tracks, but Formula 1 cars will always beat NASCAR vehicles on the twists and turns of Formula 1 tracks because Formula 1 cars have better brakes.
