Wallington Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located within Greater London, and around 12 miles south of central London, is the town of Wallington.

The history of Wallington predates the Norman Conquest. In the Domesday Book of 1086 it is recorded as 'Waletone', derived from Old English for 'farm of the Britons', implying an enclave of Celts coexisting alongside Saxon settlers nearby.

For several centuries, Wallington was a small rural settlement, although this changed dramatically in the 19th century. Due to its geographic location, it became part of the rapid expansion of London and its neighbours. The arrival of the railway was a major contributing factor to this growth, with a station opening here in 1847, initially called Carshalton, but later renamed to Wallington in 1868, coinciding with the opening of a separate station in Carshalton itself (the neighbouring town immediately to the west). Today, the station is accessible via Oyster Card, and is in Travelcard Zone 5. Direct trains to London Victoria take just over 40 minutes from here, although a potential money-saving option, depending on the destination, is to bypass Zone 1 and travel via Clapham Junction instead.

Whilst the Wallington of today is mostly modern in architecture, a few somewhat historic buildings are situated here. These include Wallington Town Hall, built in the 1930s - a notable example of the neo-Georgian architectural style (seen just before the 5-minute mark), and the Church of the Holy Trinity, built between 1866 and 1867 (seen at the very end of the walk). Both are Grade II listed.

Historically, Wallington was located within the county of Surrey up until 1965 with the formation of the ceremonial county of Greater London. Concurrently, the London Borough of Sutton was created, to which it belongs.

Famous people from Wallington include guitarist Jeff Beck and Paralympic athlete David Weir.
