2023 10 Care of the critically ill child

Critically ill children are very commonly seen in hospitals at all levels. Care of such children can still be done well with basic systems in place, good ward organisation, and training for staff, even without complex ICU equipment. This session will focus on how to set up an intensive care area in your Paediatric ward, criteria for which children should be nursed in the ICU area, and treatments that are needed. We will discuss an example of a child with meningitis and how the basic and critical care treatments can make a major difference to outcome.
