Описание к видео Choosing a research advisor: Gradpi a tool to rate and find ratings of principal investigators

Hi Everyone,

When pursuing a graduate degree in STEM or when doing research as an undergraduate you need to decide the topic of research you want to explore and finally which principal investigator in that field would be the best suited mentor for you.

Finding great mentors can be a daunting task but keep in mind that in order to succeed you need to become a proactive mentee. Yes! take control of the situation. First you need to do some introspection and find what are your profesional goals? what is a reasonable working environment and working times for you? what personal and cultural values are important to you? Finally, what is your education level and skill sets? With this in mind you can trace what skills you need to develop to achieve your goals. This should give you a pretty good idea of what characteristics you are looking for in a mentor. Finally ask around, talk to students, principal investigators and other people around you to find the mentors that you need.

For this video we interviewed Gadareth Higgs and Javier Portillo, founder and developers of Gradpi.com. This platform allows you to rate principal investigators based on five metrics:

1. Standing or Reputation in their designated fields of study,
2. Mentorship ability,
3. Autonomy or the degree of independence they provide students,
4. Resources or their ability to get grants/ their current funding situation,
5. Tact or ability to interact with people from different backgrounds.

In this video we discuss:

0:30 -Who are the founder of gradpi.com?

1:37 -How and why was this platform developed?

4:45 -How to join to rate principal investigator or find ratings?

7:15 -At what point in my career is fair to submit a research advisor rating?

10:00 -Benefits of rating your current or past research advisor as a way of helping others to find mentors that will help others succeed in STEM

Thank you for watching. We hope you find this video and information useful to continue your career path in STEM.
