Swan is a symbol of love, beauty, and happiness in many countries. Thus, the bird is national symbolic bird of Denmark since 2014. However, its breeding behaviour tells us different story than how it looks like.
Each animal has three different biological requirements: food source or feeding, habitat (own territory or shelter), and breeding. Every single individual competes each other for these basic requirements. The species has similar requirements, the competition between them is very severe.
Breeding and feeding territories and food source of Whooper swan overlap with other ducks and geese including Greylag goose, Swan goose, Mallards and others in an area. Whooper swans are very aggressive waterbird toward the species that share food source and habitat in the same area. Due to food and habitat competition, they kill chicks and young individuals of these competitors. This is one of the breeding behaviour’s reaction of the swan that evolved in many years.
