Shipbuilding Milestones: Keel Laying, Ship Launches, and Commissioning

A warship’s journey from blueprint to active service involves multiple key stages, each marking significant progress in its construction and readiness for operations.

1. Keel Laying:

The first step in ship construction, where the main structural backbone (keel) is placed.

Symbolizes the formal start of the ship’s construction and is often marked with a ceremonial event.

Ensures proper alignment of the hull and overall structural integrity.

2. Ship Launches (Two Types):

Sliding Launch (Stern or Side Launch):

The ship slides into the water from a slipway, either stern-first or sideways.
Common in smaller warships and older shipbuilding techniques.

Floating-Out Launch:

The ship is built in a dry dock, which is then flooded, allowing it to float out.
Used for large vessels like aircraft carriers and destroyers.

3. Commissioning:

The final stage where the ship is officially inducted into the Navy’s fleet after successful trials.

Marked by a grand ceremony, including the raising of the naval ensign and commissioning pennant.

Once commissioned, the ship is assigned to an operational command and begins active service.

About the host:

Lt. Commander Nikhil Kumar Chandrakala (Retd.) served as the Youngest Panelist on the Officers' Selection Board of the Indian Navy. He is the youngest Group Testing Officer to have served in the Indian Armed Forces since 1947!

Lt. Cdr. Nikhil KC (Retd.) has also served in some coveted appointments onboard frigates in the Western Fleet of the Indian Navy, on ships of Killer Squadron, legacy bearer of 1971 war. He was also Aide-De-Camp of the Admiral Commanding Maharashtra and Gujarat Naval Area.

As Captain of the Warship – Indian Naval Immediate Support Vessel T-15, Senior Officer, ISVs (West), he spearheaded a team of 16 officers and 102 men to defend Oil-Field Exploration Areas on the Western Seaboard of India. He and his team were featured in a documentary shot by India Today TV which was aired on National Television on 26 Jan 2017.
