Rembrandt Master Copy, by Paulo Frade.

In this video, Paulo Frade shows how he copied Rembrandt's self-portrait, and the probable process that Rembrandt and the old masters used to paint.

It is not possible to know exactly how Rembrandt painted the original portrait, but we can guess through chemical studies and knowledge of the traditional methods of the time.

Based on that, I made the copy.
Follow the process and the materials I used on the video.

I also used modern materials in underpainting to get quick drying;

Statement

Motivated by lapses in mental paintings that can bring the initial taste of a masterpiece, I clash between the subtle idea of colors, shapes and imaginative expressions to transform them into something dimensional and palpable. The pictorial matter is essential in my work . The oil texture, formation of layers , the use of impasto and the mixture of colors, which all are interrelated with the skin layers, the presence and the life of the person or object to be depicted.

Working with oil painting and the portrait itself can carry an intrinsic relationship with the intention of existential immutability through the image and memory. Bringing things or people into life though art gives the viewer the possibility to connect with a feeling of emanative life.

One of my main motivations is how to capture life derived from the bodies, rather than its mere representation. These subjective perceptions guide my figurative constructions, as well as the very questioning of the dual clash between the perception of life and death. If there are any subcutaneous or spiritual layers, these will be the objects of my study.

I believe the technique should service the expression. The technique of light and dark enables dramatization, moreover, abundant ink strokes refer to the three-dimensionality. Similarly, other features that I explore for language construction are scale, the dimension of emptiness versus fullness and direction of the eye sight.

Influenced by the baroque drama of Rembrandt and Caravaggio, the American realist school of the twentieth century, Lucien Freud, among other artists, I try to be in contact with environments and real people to deepen my personal research on realism, such as visits to places where existence is problematized or questioned, such as hospitals, funeral homes and nursing homes . These are living spaces that denotes the deterioration of matter, body and mind, and enhance such questions.
