In my family we have a tradition for birthdays of asking, "in this (fill in the blank) year of your life that you have just accomplished, what is the most important thing that you learned?

Today is my birthday! 57 years accomplished. I wanted to share my birthday wisdom with you- largely because I learned it by doing the work of talking to artists- making these videos, running my groups, coaching artists.

Balance is not Static!

What I mean by this is that we need both sides of the pendulum- like we need both the inhale and the exhale. It is what it means to be alive.

So as an artist, in order to have the freedom, the creative play, the diving into the unknown, the chaos, I also need the safety of order, structure, rest.

If I have too much order, structure and rest with no creative play- I feel dead. If I have too much freedom, creative play, mucking around in the unknown, chaos- I feel lost.

The structures that I have been working with recently are time management, financial budgeting, cleaning and organizing my spaces.

I can't tell you how much lighter I feel with these structures in place and how much more space there is for creative play!
