Tamil Nadu Assembly Election 2021: Why Has Kamal Haasan Choose Coimbatore South? Makkal Needhi Maiam

"Tamil politics has for decades been ruled by two Dravidian parties: DMK and AIADMK. Both the parties led by their stalwart leaders, DMK by Kalignar Karunanidhi and AIADMK by MGR and Then Jayalalitha. This is probably the first times in many decades that the state assembly election will be contested without the presence of these two mega leaders of Tamil Nadu politics. Thus, it is definitely a litmus test for the Dravidian parties and their next gen leaders to assess whether they command same respect and voter base in the masses.
While there have been smaller parties in Tamil Nadu like VCK and PMK, the parties are either in DMk fold or in AIADMk fold.
But this time around Kamal is seeking to make way in Tamil Nadu. And by Kamal, here, I don't mean the BJP, I mean Kamal Haasan. The Tamil Superstar, Producer, host- turned politician founded his own party in 2018. In this sense he was ahead of Rajinikant who had also announced his wish to enter active politics, but eventually scrapped the plan before the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections were announced. So in February 2018, Kamal Haasan founded Makkal Needhi Maiam. The name literally translates to People's Justice Centre. The party promises to be alternative to two dravidian parties and provide a third front. Just a year after it was founded, the party contested Lok Sabha elections, rather unsuccessfully.
However, it could be said that the party was tasting waters in Lok Sabha. Now the party has fielded candidates for State assembly elections. and the party chief Kamal Haasan himself is also contesting the elections. On March 12, he announced second list of candidates in which he announced his candidacy. Much to everyone's surprise, Kamal haasan decided to contest from Coimbator south.
