In the summer of 2013, I travelled around Ireland in search of the origins of ten Irish Airs, meeting and interviewing fantastic people along the way, and playing each air in the areas where they originated. The journey was made with filmmaker Marten Roos, and the film is called "Living the Tradition" It won best documentary in the EIFF, Eerie International Film Festival, has been shown in Sydney Australia, Ireland, and the UK, and has been playing on Aer Lingus in-flight entertainment.

Tomás Rua Ó Súilleabháin, a school teacher and poet, whose dates were 1785 to 1848, was moving from Derrynane to Portmagee.
And he put all his treasured books and the belongings on a boat and he went by road himself, but the boat didn’t withstand the gale and sank with the loss of the books.
And for a schoolteacher and for a poet in particular, losing a valuable collection of books, compelled him to write this lament, which is called Amhrán Na Leabhar, the Song of the Books, and it’s also known as Cuan Bhéil Inse, or Valencia Harbour.
We headed to Portmagee and Valencia Island, where we planned to film.
On the way we saw the sign to Derrynane, where Thomas’ boat had left from. We followed the sign and came across the house of the well known 19th century political leader Daniel O’Connell "The Liberator"
We went in and we started talking to a woman named Geraldine.
I asked her if she knew of Tomás Ó Súilleabháin and she said he was buried down at Derrynane Harbour in a cemetery by a 10th century monks chapel.
We went to the cemetery to film me playing the air at his graveside. People gathered and listened and it was a moving and incredible experience.
